The role of neurotransmitters systems and genes in the etiology and treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders: cell culture, human and animal studies
The aim of the poster was to present various models and methods used by the Group for Neuropsychoactive Drugs Research, Laboratory for Molecular Neuropharmacology, Division of Molecular Medicine, Rudjer Boskovic Institute, Zagreb, Croatia. The group studies involve different cell cultures, animal models of stress, as well as patients. Cell culture studies are primarily used to investigate molecular mechanisms of neuropsychoactive drugs such as adaptive changes of GABA-A receptors following prolonged benzodiazepine treatment. In animal studies we study the pathophysiology of stress and the interaction of stress and neuropsychiatric drugs including experiments addressing the effects of antidepressant drugs and interaction with stress. Finally, in cooperation with Laboratory of Molecular Neuropsychiatry we also perform human genetic studies regarding association of different neurotransmitter gene polymorphisms with various neuropsychiatric disorders particularly focusing on possible role of GABAergic genes in the development of alcohol dependence.
