Applying the DispaSET model on the Western Balkans power systems

In this master’s thesis demonstration of the implementation of the DispaSET model on the Western Balkans power system has been carried out. The main goal was modelling of four power sectors from Western Balkan countries such as Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro and Serbia with the main motivation for accelerating the development and deployment of cost-effective and low carbon technologies. With new regulations and increased need for energy planning, environmental agencies and state ministries have expressed more interest in usage and development of power system models. In order to create a proper model, all the available data relevant for describing the power systems of all four countries had to be pre-processed. In addition, methods for data processing had to be developed in order to make them compatible with the input format acceptable by the model. For verification purposes three scenarios have been developed. One reference scenario and two alternatives. For the reference scenario the year 2010 has been chosen due to the data availability. Alternative scenarios have been made for the years 2020 and 2030. Each of alternative scenarios is divided in to three cases: Case A, Case B and Case C. Cases A and B are developed according to the national strategies. These two cases are identical except that Case B simulates operation of the region in the island regime. The Case C is an alternative strategy with high penetration of renewable energy sources in to the power sector. The results from the reference scenario have been validated and accurately represent energy balances from the real world. The techno economical feasibility of alternative scenarios has been checked through calculation of average price of electricity obtained by the model.
