Number of banks and market concentration in developed and transitional countries
One of the basic characteristics of modern finance is a reduced number of banks. Two main reasons for that prevail: bankruptcies and the consolidation of bank system - mergers and acquisitions (M&A). These trends began in the US and are most pronounced there: between 1980 and 2001 as many as 6, 354 banks disappeared in the US. However, the trends are present in other countries as well, both in developed and in developing ones. Considering these structural changes in developed financial systems, the growth in market concentration of banking sectors is an expected and logical phenomenon.
