Historical Perspectives on the Transition Process

The analysis of the historical setting of transition economies has shown that the changes set forth by this process were unavoidable. The transition was inevitable. The main objectives were democratization and a shift towards the establishmet of market oriented economies. While democracy has been established in many countries, the economic issues seem to be a greater problem than originally foreseeen. In countries undergoing transition there was a drop in economic growth and in living standards. Unemployment rose dramatically and an efficient social welfare system has not yet been estabilished. The piecemeal approach has beeen largely unsuccussful. The pprocess is not transparent enough and often illicit activities are present.
