How to Improve the Position of Croatia in Exchange with Western Mediterranean Countries
Western Mediterrannean member countries of the European Union (France, Italy, Portugal and Spain) are significant foreign trade partners to Croatia. This paper analyses the position of Croatia in exchange with these countries in terms of trade and tourism. As Croatia has been marked in recent years by high foreign trade deficits, this paper analyses both export and import movements grouped according to trading goods for the period from 1990 to 1998, indicating the possible ways on improving the existing situation because the solution to the problem of the foreign trade deficit demands the establishment and entire acceptance of an export oriented strategy at the economic level, which carries with it numerous activities on both the macro and micro levels. On the other hand, with the war over, Croatia is gradually making its comeback to the tourist markets of western Mediterrannean countries, especially to the markets of Italy and France. This paper investigates those activities which should be undertaken in order to ensure the better viability of Croatias potentials, to abandon the model of a cheap and impoverished macrodestination in terms of the supply structure and to successfully include Croatia in the competitive game.
