Environmental Proactiveness in an Central European Transition Economy
Many Eastern European countries suffered decades of environmental neglect. As these countries' economies struggle to make the transition to free market economies, environmental proactiveness may be able to provide a crucial mechanism for economic and environmental development. This study explored the nature of environmental proactiveness and some of the related factors by conducting in-dept interviews with 30 companies across Croatia, Slovenia and Italy. Results from interviews suggest firms in Croatia and Slovenia may be developing environmentally proactive actions in a similar manner to firms in developed free market economies. Management attitudes toward the environment and management uncertainty about taking environmental actions were strongly related to environmental proactiveness and environmental proactiveness was related to performance of the firm. Market orientation did not appear to be directly related to environment's environmental attitude and management's uncertainty about environmental actions.
