Interactions and magnetic ordering in Co1/3NbS2
Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD) are quasi-2D materials that can be easily intercalated by magnetic ions in-between Van der Waals interlayer gaps. Co1/3NbS2 is one such example where magnetic Co ions are assembled on triangular lattice and order antiferromagnetically below 26 K. This is the first magnetically intercalated TMD where suppression of AF order under hydrostatic pressure was observed, while mechanism responsible was not clear [1]. Here we present the extended experimental and theoretical study that explores various implications of the interaction between metallic and magnetic layers [2]. We conclude that magnetic couplings beyond nearest-neighbors are necessary for realization of experimentally observed ordering. Super-exchange and RKKY interactions were considered as comparably important for magnetic couplings. The suppression of the ordering under pressure is ascribed to the shift in balance between those two interactions.
