Optical pumping of the Zeeman sublevels of rubidium hyperfine states

We present the results of experimental investigations on rubidium D1 and D2 hyperfine states optically pumped by single mode diode lasers. The method of obtaining alignment of atomic spins (optical pumping) has a crucial role in many optical physics experiments: production of lasers, precise measurement of atomic hyperfine splittings, parity non-conservation effects, shifting of atom-dimer equilibrium composition, etc. During the last decade new techniques such as: electromagnetically induced transparency, quantum jumps, coherent population trapping have been developed, which in their background have optical pumping. In our experiments the rubidium vapor was generated in a stainless steel heat pipe oven. We used helium as a buffer gas. A steady magnetic field of up to 81 G was applied to the oven with a pair of Helmholtz coils. The Rb atom spin orientation is produced by using the optical pumping with circularly polarized D1 and D2 lines propagating parallel to the applied magnetic field. The lasers used for optical pumping were single mode free runing diode lasers (SHARP, 780 nm, 7 mW and HITACHI, 785 nm, 40 mW) with linewidth of the order of 100 MHz. The atomic spin orientation was measured by a transmission method. The orientation parametars S for the temperature range from (353-423) K and helium pressures from (0.4-100) Torr were calculated. The dependence of the aligment of atomic spins on the magnetic field was investigated (magnetic resonances). We were able to scan the whole absorption profiles of the Rb D1 and D2 resonance lines by varying the laser diode current or temperature. At higher temeratures and helium pressures, we observed the signifficant difference in the value of orientation parametar when the atoms were optically pumped in a red versus blue wings of resonance D1 line. The origin of this red asymmetry will be discussed.
