Surgical and oxidative stress after radical surgery in patients with colorectal carcinoma

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) have long been implicated in a large variety of processes and diseases, including carcinogenesis and cancer progression. The purpose of this clinical study was to evaluate appearance of changes in some markers of oxidative stress and acute phase response in patients with colorectal adenocarcinoma after radical surgery. Twenty adult patients affected by colorectal adenocarcinoma in different stage had undergone surgical treatment. Venous blood samples were obtained 24 hours before surgery and on postoperative days 1, 3 and 7 and one month after surgery for measurement of transferrin, albumin and superoxide dismutase (SOD). Levels of SOD revealed that reactive feed back to antioxidant utilization caused by surgical injury occurred followed by increased activity of antioxidant system due to tumor removal in later postoperative period. At the same time "negative markers" of acute phase response, albumin and transferrin concentration decreased. Since transferrin is also antioxidant, postoperatively measured changes could be partly dependent upon broad utilization of antioxidants as result of systemic stress response after surgical injury in cancer patients.
