Decomposition of fish samples for determination of mercury

The aim of this study was to compare the efficiency of alkaline and acid decomposition of biological material, carried out in open or closed system. Total mercury was determined by cold vapour atomic absorption spectrometry. Our results showed that alkaline opened or closed vessel digestion results in considerable loss of mercury. There was no loss of Hg after acid digestion carried out in a closed system.
