Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) Response to Planting Dates, Fertilisation and Plant Density under Subtropical Conditions of Ethiopia
Research in kenaf response to planting date (June 21, July 3, 13 and 23), fertilisation with N+P2O5 kg ha-1 (16+16, 32+92, 48+138 and 48+46 urea-top dressing + 138) and plant density (50 and 75 plants m-2) were carried out from 1989 to 1990 on a Ferralsol rhodic soil at Horro Alleltu experimental farm in Ethiopia. The best planting date turned out to be the one performed on June 21 and July 3. Planting on July 13 and 23 gave a significant (PŁ0.01) reduction in dry stalk yield by 26.5% as compared to planting (21/6 against planting on 13/7), 44% (21/6 against planting on 23/7), and 24.0% (13/7 against planting on 23/7) in 1989 and by 57.4% (21/6 against planting on 23/7) and 61.0% (13/7 against planting on 23/7) in 1990. Fertilisation increased the yield considerably from 5.0% to 17.6%. Therefore fertilisation with at least 94 kg N + 138 kg P2O5 ha-1 is recommended. Higher plant densities resulted in significantly higher yields, so that plant density between 50 to 75 plants m-2 is recommended.
