Ambient air measurements for determination of PCDD and PCDF in Zagreb

Considerable levels of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDD) and dibenzofurans (PCDF) were found as combustion by-products of waste incineration, home heating, and car exhausts in many countries. The construction of a mobile plant for thermal destruction of waste, primarily industrial ("PUTO"),located at Jakuševec, a village south of Zagreb, initiated an investigation of levels of PCDD and PCDF, two groups of pollutants generally known as dioxins, in the ambient air of Zagreb. So far no data on on the levels of PCDD/PCDF in the ambient air in Zagreb have been available. At present, the "PUTO" location is used for the municipal waste disposal. A total of twenty ambient air samples was collected at five locations differing in the expected levels and possible PCDD/PCDF sources: Location of "PUTO" Jakuševec; Jakuševec, village south of "PUTO" Đorđićeva street, location of intensive traffic in the city center; Žitnjak, the main industrial zone of the Zagreb city; and IMI, location in the north of the city at the foot of Medvednica with the lowest air contamination levels. Sampling was done in May and June 1997 and from January to April 1998. The HRGC-HRMS analysis was done by MWC-Michael Wilken UmweltConsulting, Berlin and MPU, GmbH, Dep. Analytical Laboratory, Berlin. The calculated I-TEQ values (using international toxic equivalency factors, I-TEFs) were between 9 and 47 fg/m3 for samples collected in May/June 1997 and between 17 and 308 fg/m3 for samples collected from January to April 1998. The samples collected in 1997 showed the highest levels at the location of "PUTO" plant and in the Jakuševec village (samples from the industrial zone Žitnjak were not taken at the time). The highest levels in the samples from 1998 were found at the location of Žitnjak, while the lowest I-TEQ values were determined at the IMI location.
