The Decline or the Renaissance of the Mediterranean
The presentday Mediterranean is not an integrated region developmentally, civilizationally or culturally. In the absence of exchange-based and multicultural links the survival of the region is questionable, and therefore the Mediterranean presents a picture of the potentiality but not the reality of modern, global, regional and local development. As long as the Mediterranean societies remain unable to contemplate, redefine, change and possibly accept either the European or the Euro-Asian-African framework, the Mediterranean will continue to go through crises and conflicts that it has suffered for almost two centuries.Only imposed standardization, making possible a rapid economic and technological progress of the entire region, might offer some kind of stability to be used as a springboard towards new, de-territorialized, individualized differences which will emerge on the local level and, as such, not impede the globalization of the Mediterranean.
