Determination of Sulphur Compounds in the Atmosphere Near the Natural Gas Treatment Plant in Croatia
Natural gas from the gas and gas-condensate field in the northern Croatia contains high levels of hydrogen sulphide and mercaptans. Until 1991, sour gas from all fields used to be collected and cleaned at the gas treatment plant (GTP) in the gas field by absorption of sulphur compounds in K2CO3 solution. Subsequently, the separated sour gases (CO2, H2S, and mercaptans) were emitted into the atmosphere. In order to protect the ambient air against pollution by H2S and mercaptans, the sour gas were refined by new technology (a-MDA process). The sulphur compounds were emitted into the atmosphere. The emission of H2S and mercaptans decreased from 500 ppm to less than 20 ppm in spite of a higher production.
