Pathomorphological and Epizootiological Study of Vibriosis in Sea Bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) in Croatian Mariculture

This work derives from our observation on different fish farms along Croatian part of the Adriatic coast systematically monitored for fish diseases. Vibriosis caused by Vibrio anguillarum in its different forms ranging from peracute septicemic attacks, until chronic granulomatous inflammation is one of the most important and devastating diseases in cage cultivated sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) in Croatia. In this work the clinical behavior, pathological changes and bacteriological findings in several outbreaks of vibriosis are presented. The affected fish of all observed farms swam slowly at the water surface, separates from the lot and were reluctant to eat. Pathoanatomically, fish had skin discoloration, presence of erythema on the fin base and the mouth, multiple circumscribed hemorrhages over the skin on the vent in acute and subacute cases, while in more advanced cases ulcerations were noted as well. Internal examination revealed hemorrhages on the liver, stomach, intestine and enlarged spleen. The samples of tissue of all macroscopic changed organs were submitted to histopathological examination and results are discussed in this paper. Bacteriological examination of liver, kidney and spleen yielded repeatedly Vibrio anguillarum serotype O1, differing biochemically just in few properties.
