Isospora suis and Cryptosporidium sp. in piglets
The occurrence and incidence of Isospora suis (I. suis) and Cryptosporidium sp. were studied in piglets on a farm in the Zagreb surroundings. In seven sows, farrowing occurred at about the same time and their piglets were housed in seven separate pens. Samples of the piglet feces were examined daily for the first 14 days, then periodically until the 28 th day of life. In some pens, the first occurrence of I. suis was recorded on day 6, and on day 10 the infection spread throughout the pens observed. The severity of infection increased from day 6 till day 12, whereafter a decrease was recorded. In the fourth week of the study, the presence of I. suis in piglets was negligible. The clinical signs of illness (diarrhea, dehydration) that varied in severity, were evident from day 8 till day 12. In the group of piglets with a high grade of I. suis infection, the severity of infection decreased significantly by day 14. The study group of piglets did not compensate for the loss of body weight until day 28, i.e. until the end of the study. Samples of the piglet feces were also tested for Cryptosporidium sp. from day till day 28. The presence of oocysts was recorded on day 15 and persisted until the end of the study.
