Granulometric analysis of chips generated from planing of different species of wood
The objective of this paper was to investigate the influence of feed speed, cutting depths and wood characteristics on particle size distribution of chips generated in planing of solid walnut-wood (Juglans regia L.), cherry-wood (Prunus avium L.) and horse chestnut-wood (Castanea sativa Mill.). Granulometric analysis of chips generated in planing of radial, semi-radial and tangential boards at two different feed speeds (vf1= 6 m/min and vf2 = 12 m/min) and two cutting depths (h1= 2 mm and h2 = 5 mm) is presented. The results showed that the biggest share of chips is made of particles from 2 to 8 millimetres. The sample of chipped wood generated in planing of chestnut wood is mostly made of particles up to 4 mm, while in planing of walnut and cherry wood under the same conditions the generated particles are usually larger than 4 mm. The increase of feed speed affects the increase of share of larger particles and decrease of share of small fractions. Difference in cutting depth has no considerable influence on particle size/distribution of chips.
