The sense of coherence in Slovenian and Croatian adults

The Sense of Coherence (SOC) construct refers to a global orientation reflecting the extent to which a person has an enduring and dynamic feeling of confidence that the internal and external stimuli are predictable and explicable, that the available resources meet the demands posed by the stimuli, and that these demands are challenges worthy of investment and engagement. According to Antonovsky (1993), who introduced the construct, the SOC is universally meaningful and cuts across the lines of gender, social class, region and culture. This paper presents some results of a broader study that was aimed at comparing the SOC in people from two transitional countries: Slovenia and Croatia. A total of 927 adult males and females (546 Slovenian and 381 Croatian) completed a questionnaire package which included a shortened version of the SOC scale and a set of questions pertaining to various socio-demographic characteristics and subjective importance of being married, having a job (within the profession), having children and using leisure time effectively. The results showed that the SOC was stronger in the Slovenian compared to Croatian participants. Other significant differences in the SOC were observed primarily for the variables related to employment: in both countries the SOC was stronger in the participants who are employed, especially if they have a job that is adequate to their qualification or attach greater importance to having such job. Another significant effect was observed for the subjective importance of the effective use of leisure time, with the SOC being higher at the higher levels of this factor.
