Temperature Rise in Composite Samples Cured by Blue Superbright Light Emitting Diodes
Today, importance is attached to the problems of marginal adaptation rather than to any increase in intrapulpal temperature that occurs in composite restoration placement from the materials themselves and light curing units. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the degree of conversion and temperature rise in composite specimens when conventional softstart Elipar Highlihgt curing lamp (ESPE, Germany)and blue superbright light emitting diodes (LED) are used. The measurements were performed for three hybrid composite materials and one free-flow fine particle hybrid composite after 40 seconds illumination. The degree of conversion were performed by Perkin Elmer FTIR Spectrometer on the 0.1 mm thick specimens for five repeated measurements. The temperature rise was measured on the same specimens as well as on the 4x4x4 mm thick specimens (non-isothermal conditions).A little lower values of the degree of cure as well as significantly lower temperature incsrease in the composite specimens were obtained in case of blue LED what was analysed by independent t-Test. (at the 0.05 level). Those results could be explained by very low output of blue LED (12 mW/cm2-40 s)compared to Elipar Highlight where output changed from 100 mW/cm2-10 s to 700 mW/cm2-30 s. This minimal energy of blue superbright LED illuminating composite resin sample was optimized by the most efficient wavelength of 470 nm and could be recommanded for curing the first composite layer especially in the case of direct pulp capping by dentinal adhesive systems. This study was supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology of the Republic of Croatia.
