Some wood properties of two poplar clones as raw material

Fast grown and genetically improved clones of poplars (Populus spp.) are cultivated for biomass, pulp and paper. For selecting trees it is important to know the properties of wood that are under genetic control. This study presents tree characteristics and anatomical wood properties of chosen poplar clones (S1-8 and I-214) grown on two contrast sites in Croatia. Site and clone have statistically significant influence on tree characteristics of chosen poplars. However, clone S1-8 has superior growth increment, surviving and it has significantly larger wood ray percentage as well as larger cell wall thickness on both sites. At the same time clone S1-8 has larger amount of undesired tension wood that limits its potential as raw material.
