Approaches and methodological issues of the Croatian Historical Towns Atlas

At the present time the project of Historical Towns Atlas is being conducted in 17 European countries. Croatia joined this group in 2002. The project of Croatian Historical Towns Atlas is being conducted as one of the scientific-research projects of the Croatian Ministry of Science, Education and Sport. Until 2005 the project was based in the Croatian State Archive and after 2005 it was taken over by the Institute of Social Sciences in Zagreb where it is still on going. After the evaluation of the first cycle of research from 2002-2006 the Ministry of Science approved the research for another five years in January 2007. They also listed the project as being amongst the 25 best rated projects within historical sciences in Croatia. Three volumes of the historical atlas have been published so far within the project – the Historical Atlas of Bjelovar, Sisak and Koprivnica and the fourth volume, the Atlas of Hrvatska Kostajnica will be published in June 2007. Each of the volumes of the Croatian Towns Atlas is based on the common directives of the International Commission for the History of Towns and the Atlas Working Group but it also contains some speciEach of the volumes of the atlas follows the development of a town from its first beginning to the modern day (including the town’ s latest general urban plan) and therefore the historical and cultural identity of the town can be easily read from the atlas. This identity is also a starting point in determining the preservation of monuments, the cultural and historical heritage and identity of the town as well as its future development. The publishing of the results of the project aims to provide new knowledge about the spatial development of Croatian towns in a European context and at the same time evaluate cartographic sources and sources of Croatian history. This is a research of sources, which in history as a science, is considered as the basis for any other scientific-research projects. Thus the project of the Croatian Historical Towns Atlas allows further research in history, eco-history, historical geography, art history, sociology and urbanism. Due to the great importance of the cartographic sources in all sorts of historiographic-geographic analyses and interdisciplinary approaches, alongside their application in specific researches in the area of history sciences, the results of this research will be useful for other sciences which might touch on the history of a place, protection of historical cultural heritage and contemporaneous regional development. The development of Croatian towns happened within the European context, which is obvious in urban, architectonic, economic, cultural and other aspects. Therefore a comparative study of Croatian towns with similar projects from other European countries which are included in the coordination of the historical atlases of towns on the European level, will allow an insight into the common historical and cultural heritage of European towns. Therefore by publishing the Croatian Historical Towns Atlases we would like to contribute to the better understanding of common European roots and encourage further comparative research of towns. fic approaches and methods.
