The comparison of the local and the global method for proving unitarizability
Using the example of the hermitian quaternionic group of the split rank two, the author compares two methods of proving unitarizability of the representations (for the groups over the local fields). The global method amounts to the calculation of the (part) of the residual spectrum, but the appearance of the representation on the local place depends on some global information (the zeroes and poles of the global L--function) which is often difficult to relate with the local data. This is bypassed by using a completely local approach which can be generalized to the classical groups of large ranks.
