Adhesion parameters at the interface in nanoparticulate filled polymer systems
Interface in particulate filled polymer systems is the central place that determines the behaviour of the composites and polymer blends. In this paper we have made the surface free energy measurements and calculations of adhesion parameters at the interface in poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) and polyurethane (PU) composites as well as in styrene acrylonitrile / ethylene propylene diene monomer (SAN/EPDM) blends filled with calcium carbonate (CaCO3) nanofillers. We have investigated the effects of filler surface pre-treatment with stearic acid and/or silane on the interface and related it to the properties. The effective adhesion in the particular composites and blends was followed by optimal adhesion parameters at the interface i.e. by the minimal interfacial energy and nanofillers situated at the interface. The models used for prediction of the filler location in regard to the interface showed a good correlation with improvement of the properties for the systems that are close to the conditions of the effective adhesion.
