Biomass and Waste Use Program (BIOEN) - Aims, Results and Further Activities
Possibilities of energy production from biomass have lately been cinsidered in many developed European countries. In Croatia, national energy program BIOEN (Biomass and Waste Use Program) was launched in March 1997 with the aim of providing permanent care for the use of biomass and waste for energy production and environmental protection. In the first phase, the primary task was to make a draft program that would involve an assesment of the energy potential, the aims and real dynamics of realisation, economic and finaincial features, organisation and necessary institutuions, as well as other activities important for the program. This paper deals with the most important aspects, results and further acticities of the BIOEN program. The overall aim of the National energy program BIOEN (Biomass and Waste Use Program) is to increase the use of environmentaly-sound, and cost competitive bioenergy on a sustainable basis, to provide a contribution to meeting future energy demands. Special attention was given to barriers, solutions and possible contribution of the BIOEN program in order to increase the share of biomass in energy production in Croatia.
