The approximate solutions of the theory of shells in calculating strength of spherical pressure vessels
This paper presents a study of using the approximate solutions from the theory of shells of revolution to develop a method that can be used in the design of spherical pressure vessels supported by a ring. Finite mathematical expressions derived from these approximate solutions of the shell theory in a general form can be used in calculating internal forces, moments and displacements in walls of spherical pressure vessels. These solutions are an alternative to exact solutions obtained by the general theory of shells which requires complex mathematical calculations. By superimposing of membrane and moment theory, a method for calculating the strength of spherical pressure vessels is developed. Because of the acquired explicit expressions for generalized internal forces, this method is useful for pressure vessel design and for determining pressure vessel reliability. A computer program utilizing this method has been developed as well. Computer calculations have been performed using a representative numerical example. Analysis results are presented through tables and diagrams.
