Influence of the blink reflex to motor evoked responses of facial muscles in man
During transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) the stimulating coil covers a large area of the skull which is innervated by the trigeminal nerve and excites trigeminal sensory afferents hich can trigger the blink reflex. Therefore, the R1 component of the blink reflex limits the evaluation of the responses recorded in the facial muscles with almost the same latency as R1. Overlapping responses of different origins therefore limit the evaluation of responses recorded in the facial muscles. Motor evoked responses were recorded from orbicularis oculi (OC) and orbicularis oris (OR) muscles of 11 healthy subjects after TMS with MAGSTIM 200 stimulator. Additionally, electrical stimulation of the supraorbital nerves was perfomed in all 11 subjects and in three of them a xylocain blockade of both supraorbital nerves.
