Effects of interferon (IFN) beta-1a treatment on visual evoked potentials (VEP) in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients
Multiple sclerosis in an autoimmune disorder characterised by the repeated occurence of demyelinating lesions within the central nervous system. In the last fwe years clinical trials have shown that interferon beta-1a is a safe and effective treatment of patients with relapsing-remitting MS. Recent data have shown that administration of IFN beta -1a decreases bith relapse rate and burden of disease in patients with MS (jacobs et al., 1996). the effect of IFN beta-1a on the optic neuritis in MS patients was evaluated by measuring the amplitude and the latency of pattern revearsal VEP. We present data obtained from a one-year follow up of 12 patients (10 female, 2 man, mean age 37.3 yrs). all MS patients fulfield the criteria for definite MS according to Poser (19839. Our preliminary results show consistently the same values of the amplitude and the latencies of pattern revearsel VEP during one-year follow up.
