Regenerative surgery: indications and limits in the treatment of intrabony defects.
Regenerative periodontal surgery is in a new era. With more and more data showing successful long term results of regenerative periodontal surgery and with the availability of protein therapy, today we can treat teeth that would otherwise be considered hopeless. But, is it all so predictable, is successes guarantied just by placing a growth factor into an intrabony defect? As we know the morphology of the defect is a determining factor on how to appropriately treat it. But what can we do with teeth that are considered hopeless? This presentation will focus on the use of a combination regenerative therapy utilizing Enamel Matrix Derivate, recombinant Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor and bone grafts in the treatment of the most challenging intrabony defects. Proper surgical approaches and microsurgical suturing techniques will be shown in detail. In addition, a brief look into the future clinical application of BMPs in periodontal regeneration will be shown with some in vitro results on the molecular mechanisms of the bmp action from our laboratory.
