Periodontal status in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Periodontal diseases and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are characterized by chronic inflammation due to anaerobic microorganisms. There is a body of evidence in current medical and dental literature that suggests an association between periodontitis and respiratory diseases. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine to what extent can periodontal destruction influence the progression of COPD.The examined group comprised of 93 patients with COPD(mean age 65.8 years). The control group comprised of 50 systemically healthy individuals (mean age 62.1 years).Perio status was taken in both groups (API and PBI, probing depth PD, recession RE and clinical attachment loss CAL). The results indicate that there is a statistically significant difference among groups according to every parameter of periodontal condition, except for gingival inflammation. CAL was statistically higher in the COPD group (P < 0.001).A statistically significant difference (P < 0.001) was observed according to the smoking habits. 81% of COPD patients were smokers, but the results demonstrated that there is no difference in periodontal condition among smokers and nonsmokers. A multivariance discriminant analysis of perio status confirmed that COPD patients have deeper PD, greater RE and higher API in comparison to the control group, with men having higher values than women. We can conclude that COPD has a great influence on the development of periodontal disease.
