Complex engineering structures under extreme conditions : modelling, computations, identifications and uncertainty

This special issue of Engineering Computations gathers the invited contributions from the participants of the NATO-sponsored advanced research workshop entitled “ Man-Made and Natural Hazards in Dynamics of Structures: Explosions, Earthquakes, Stormy Winds” , which was held from May 28 to June 1, 2006 in the Croatian coastal town of Opatija. The NATO-ARW meeting had the goal to examine the new challenges that are brought by the present time in fighting the man-made and natural hazards in dynamics of structures. The present threat of the terrorist attacks or accidental explosions, the climate change which brings strong stormy winds, tsunamis or yet the destructive earthquake motion that occurs in previously inactive regions, are several examples of the kind of applications we addressed during the meeting. The keynote lectures were already published in a book by Ibrahimbegovic, A. and Kozar, I. (Eds), Extreme Man-Made and Natural Hazards in Dynamics of Structures, Springer, Berlin, pp. 1-397. The present special issue provides the complementary information with this scientific journal presentation of the research results, whose early versions were first discussed by other participants during the NATO-ARW meeting. Several important issues are addressed: first and foremost, the modeling of complex structures both in statics and dynamics, including the applications to fracture (papers by: Bohinc et al., Brancherie and Ibrahimbegovic), second, computational procedures for dynamics of complex structures and coupled problems (contributions from Kozar, Shiu et al., Markovic et al., Kassiotis et al. and Ibrahimbegovic et al.), uncertainty apects (Huatefeuille et al.), identification (Kucerova et al.) and software coupling implementation for dealing with complex multi-scale and multi-physics problems (Niekamp et al.). Given the rather large scope of this special issue, we hope that the readers will each find a paper of particular interest, and thus pursue a more thorough investigation of the presented ideas. We would like to thank very much all the authors of this special issue for their contributions.
