Catalytic reforming – increasing purity of produced hydrogen with physical absorption
In Oil Refinery Rijeka, as well as in many others refineries around the world, catalytic reforming is the only source of hydrogen for the existing hydro-processes. Hydrogen purity, depending on the process parameters in semi regenerative reforming process and on the state of the catalyst, is in the range from 68 to 75 vol.%. Since it has been shown that hydrogen purity is the limiting parameter for secondary processes like hydro-treatment and hydro-cracking, the most efficient way for the net-separator gas enrichment has been investigated. In refinery practice for many years now, pure hydrogen production processes from oil fractions or natural gas have been known. Never the less, building of such units represent mayor capital investments and requires a lot of time. On the basis of modern existing commercial solutions new solution for obtaining the hydrogen with higher purity was developed in Oil Refinery Rijeka. This new solution has been proven as a unique way for a very fast and low cost build up of the existing catalytic reforming process. In this way efficiency of the whole refinery can be improved without any mayor investments. Implemented solution is entirely applicable to any refinery with similar problems regarding lack of hydrogen or lack of major capital goods for the new separation or production processes.
