The Incidence of Yellow Mistletoe on Pedunculate and Sessile Oak in the Central Croatia

Yellow mistletoe (Loranthus europaeus Jacq.) is an epiphytic semi-parasite, mostly on species of Fagaceae family. In Croatia it occurs on all autochtonous deciduous oak species as well as on the sweet chestnut. Pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) as well as sessile oak (Quercus petraea /Matt./ Liebl.) are the most common hosts of the yellow mistletoe. The research of the incidence and distribution of yellow mistletoe on the pedunculate and sessile oak was carried out in the area administered by Croatian Forests Co.Ltd., Forest Administration Karlovac. The research was carried out in selected compartments of more than 30 years of age, in which the number of infected and non-infected trees, as well as the number of mistletoe plants on infected trees, was recorded through a diagonal survey. In total, for pedunculate oak, five management units and 131 compartments in the area of three forest offices were examined. Out of the total number of 6819 examined trees, 3.3 % were infected with yellow mistletoe. On the infected trees there were 1.5 mistletoe shrubs on the average, and the highest number of shrubs on one tree was 11. The incidence of yellow mistletoe on sessile oak was examined in the area of five forest offices, ten management units and 88 compartments, on the sample of 8654 trees. The mistletoe was observed on 9.5 % of the examined trees. On the average three mistletoe plants were growing on the infected trees, and the maximum number of plants observed on one tree was 30.
