Evolution of an Organic Champion: social entrepreneurship, complexity theory and leadership in transition - a Croatian case
This chapter is concerned with describing, understanding and analyzing the emergence of Željko Mavrović as an organic champion in social entrepreneurship in Croatia, a society in transition in the aftermath of socialism, war, authoritarian nationalism, and independence. Mainstream theories of social entrepreneurship and leadership allow us to describe aspects of Mavrović’s progress from sporting hero to pioneer in a largely new field. However, there is a need to turn to systems and complexity theory to gain greater analytical understanding of emergent elements in a complex, multi-level, system. We approach the case study in terms of 6 elements or threads which come together in particular ways: his individual biography ; the discipline of boxing ; macro-biotic principles ; the Croatian emerging market ; organic farming as an industry ; and the specific enterprise and organization context. Together, these elements help us to understand the emergence of innovative social entrepreneurship. We utilize complex systems theory in a number of ways in the text, most importantly in terms of a multi-level systems approach to capacity issues.
