Climate change and forest cultures in Croatia

Total area of forests and forest land in Croatia amounts about 47 % of total spatial area of Croatia. There is currently about 75 000 ha of conifer cultures in Croatia or about 3% of total forest area and about 330 000 ha of area which has to be brought to forest production. One of the primary roles of culture establishment in Croatia is, besides increase of wood production and possibility of change of forest fund structure through afforeststion of heatlands and melioratiove actions in degraded forests which in Croatia amount about 21 % (18, 1 % bushwood, 2, 3 % maquise and 1 % garrigue) of the total amount of covered area. Planned and organised work on the increase of the conifers in Croatia forest fund begun around 1960 which was the starting point for all significant scientific research in establishment and silviculture of forest cultures in Croatia. Until then role of forest cultures in Croatian forestry has changed and it is growing bigger as the climate conditions change. Climate changes as well as the changes in soil, have affected physiological condition and decline of specific tree species which has specially influenced forest cultures. Especially large decline is recorded in monocultures of Norway spruce. This paper presents guidelines for management of monocultures in Croatia in which significant decline was observed. Present forest cultures and planned establishment of new forest cultures are presenting amense national natural renewable resource.
