Economic analysis of viticulture and wine production in Croatia

Despite very favourable natural conditions, viticultural and wine production in the Republic of Croatia has not reached the expected level of development. Vineyards occupy only 2.6% of total utilised agricultural area. Relying on survey data, the authors analysed the economic success of viticultural and wine production at family farms in the Mediterranean region of Croatia, i.e. in the region of Istria. The results indicated that family farms in Istria have small viticultural and wine production, which is, basically, carried out, on average, on 0.73 ha of vineyards, producing 6.3 tons of grapes, i.e. 32.7 hl of wine. The grape and wine producing technologies are not the most modern ones, which results in the realisation of low economic effects. It is established that, by means of technological and market improvements, on the same vineyard surface area, their production income can be increased by 87%. Also, a model of viticultural and wine production was analysed on a vineyard surface area measuring 3 ha, where modern work technologies are applied and when a half of wine produced is sold in bottles. Family farms having such production would achieve 9.6 times higher income, much better indicators of productivity and cost effectiveness and one member of the family would have permanent employment.
