Multi-objective scheduling and a resource allocation problem in hospitals
This study considers the problem of scheduling the medical treatments of resident patients in hospital on a daily basis according to the restrictions on medical equipment and medical personnel (physicians) who are being assigned at the same time. The problem is formulated as a multi-objective binary integer programming (BIP) model. To tackle the discrete search space, a large number of variables and constraints, and multiple objectives involved in the problem, three types of metaheuristics are proposed and implemented: a variable neighborhood search (VNS) based method, a scatter search (SS) based methods, and a nondominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II). This paper also provides the results of computational experiments and makes a comparison on their ability for finding efficient solutions to the multi-objective scheduling problem.
