Soil Cone Index as Parameter of Military Off-road Vehicles Mobility

Terrain mobility or vehicle mobility includes notions connected with mobility of the basis, mean speed of movement and autonomy of movement. With off-road vehicles, important mobility features, outside road communications are linked to the mobility of the terrain and technical-tactical characteristics of the vehicle. This paper analyses mobility of the off-road vehicles with regard to pedological basis in certain meteorological conditions, or rather through analysis of the comparison of the soil's bearing capacity and maximal pressure of the vehicle on the ground. Conical resistance is measured with penetrometer on depths of the soil of 10, 15 and 20 centimetres. With application of Krigin method of interpolation within ArcGIS software, or rather Geostatistic Analyst extension, spatial layers of the conical resistance of the soil have been calculated. For assessment of the possibility of the vehicle to pass through a terrain, parameters of the conical index of the vehicle have been used (Vehicle Cone Index – VCI), that is developed on basis of the partially empirical expression for vehicle's Mobility Index - MI), and Conical index of the soil (CI) within NATO Reference Mobility Model – NRMM. By comparing the values of the CI and VCI, empirical possibility of the passage of two types of tactical vehicles has been defined, light tactical vehicle of the make MB G270 CDI 4×4, of nominal useful bearing capacity of 1000 kg and a modern truck of the make IVECO ML 100 E21W 4×4 of nominal useful bearing capacity of 5300 kg for one and multiple number of passages. Real mobility of the vehicle, in addition to the analysis of the acceptable depth of the tyres’ trace is carried out by measuring on the terrain of the training area "Glavica".
