Thermal imaging and Thermal Stress Analysis of the impact damage of composite materials

The infrared thermography, together with Thermal Stress Analysis and Pulse heating thermography, is used in evaluation of impact damage in fiberglass composite materials. The controlled impact of 19.61J impactor with fiberglass specimen was recorded by a high frame rate infrared thermal camera. The elastic deformation, together with damage, have been evaluated and compared to post-impact analysis performed by methods of Thermal Stress Analysis and Pulse heating thermography. The applicability and limitations of presented infrared method methods have been addressed. The combination of both methods, the Thermal Stress Analysis and Pulse heating thermography, is suggested as appropriate for detecting a damage including fiber fractures and delamination.
