Short sea shipping centres: the role of Croatian sea ports
Maritime transport is the only transport mode that grows as fast as road transport. At the beginning of the 21st century, about 80 % of world trade was carried by sea. Maritime transport system ensures 90% of the freight exchanges of Europe with the rest of the world whilst short sea shipping carriers 40% of the intra-European freight. In recent years, the shipping sector has expanded considerably. Also, shipping continues to be the most environmentally friendly mode of transport. European Commission has an active policy in promoting short sea shipping as a solution for road congestion through European continent. Republic of Croatia has a very favourable position for development of short sea shipping. This paper observes the role of port competitiveness and introduction of short sea shipping in Croatia through findings of EU funded project ADRIATIC3S.
