Besides USA, EU is the leading tourist region in the world (according to WTO). In 1997 EU registered 248 mn of international tourist arrivals and about US$ 177 bn tourist receipts, which makes some 60% and 78% in total European receptive tourism. Intra - regional trips dominate in international tourism of EU (mostly one - day excursions and short breaks), but in the last few years the number of tourists coming from the other parts of Europe is increasing. More than a half of EU citizens EU travel during their holidays, which indicates the strong emitive potential of this region. Tourist expenditure of the Europeans is, according to WTO, estimated to US$ 208 bn in 1997, a half of which spent within the Union. The global importance of EU is expected to grow even more in future, mostly due to further integration processes, introduction of the Euro as the unique, single currency. as well as widened socio - demographic, technical and technological changes in society.
