Photoactivity of Suspended and Immobilized P-25 TiO2 Nanoparticles on Example of Diazo Congo Red dye Degradation

This chapter of photocatalytic degradation of aqueous Congo Red dye (CR) solution has been investigated using two batch Pyrex glass photoreactor and artificial UV light (254 nm). For the first reactor A suspended TiO2 (Degussa’s P-25) nanoparticles were used, while for another reactor B TiO2 (Degussa’s P-25) nanoparticles were immobilized on inner surface of Pyrex glass. A spray coating technique was used for the immobilization of TiO2 nanoparticles. The experiments performed in both photoreactors indicate that the degradation of the Congo Red dye follows a pseudo-first order kinetics according to the Langmuir–Hinshelwood model. Photoactivity of immobilized TiO2 layer for four times diluted CR solutions is almost equal to the photoactivity of the system with suspended photocatalyst. More than 80% of the initial concentration of CR is degraded in both reactors after 6 hours. But, looking at overall decrease of the CR concentration, in reactor A more CR molecules are degraded, since the initial concentration of the CR solution in reactor A is near 4 times higher. Besides the photocatalytic degradation, adsorption process in reactor A on TiO2 nanoparticles was also investigated and described.
