Pine needles as biomonitoring indicator of organochlorine compounds pollution in Croatia
Pine needles are covered by wax layer which has the ability to accumulate airborne lipophilic compounds. Therefore, pine needles can serve as biomonitoring indicators reflecting average pollution profile at a particular site. The aim of this study was to evaluate the distribution of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) and organochlorine pesticides in pine needles (Pinus strobus and Pinus nigra) collected at ten different sites in Croatia. The following organochlorine pesticides and their derivates were analyzed: HCB (hexachlorobenzene), HCH (hexachlorocyclohexane, alpha-, beta- and gama-isomers), p,p'-DDT, p,p'-DDD, p,p'-DDD, and the following six PCB congeners (numbered according to IUPAC): PCB-28, PCB-52, PCB-101, PCB-138, PCB-153, PCB-180. Levels of organochlorine pesticides and PCB in samples collected in Croatia were similar or lower than levels determined in some European countries.
