Goal orientation patterns and the self-regulation of reading in high-school and university students
This chapter presents an overview of the authors' work on the motivational components of reading strategy use in high-school and university students, with an emphasis on the role of goal orientation patterns. In the first part, we draw on the literature that supports the achievement goal perspective in self-regulation and its motivational consequences. In the second part, we present an overview of the recent authors' work on self-regulation and reading strategy usage. The results of two studies conducted on high-school and university students are presented and the goal orientation patterns are then compared. The results of the cluster analysis showed that groups of students can be differentiated according to their goal orientation pattern. The largest groups of students adopt multiple goals. The motivational profile, as well as the reading and learning strategy use of each obtained cluster are described. Groups with a high mastery orientation had more adaptive motivational profile and more adequate reading and learning strategy use, than those groups with a high work-avoidance orientation.
