Fire Fighting Standards in Rural Areas in Croatia
The criteria of fire fighting through mandatory construction oh hydrant network in each public water supply system are logical in larger settlements where the part of the capacity used for fire fighting is small in comparison with water supply requirements and does not affect the pipe diameter. In larger settlements the population density is higher, with a larger number of public institutions, and the risks of fire and damage to property and human health are higher. In rural environment, without social facilities and with houses scattered over a large area, application of the Regulations on Hydrant Networks considerably increases the costs of construction, operation and maintenance, dictating larger pipe diameters, higher pressure and installing of hydrants and booster stations. The authors raise the question whether it is possible to modify the existing Regulations by separating fire fighting from water supply and providing it later on by alternative solutions. This would relieve the pressure of a part of large investments in water supply on local communities which are at the moment in very difficult economic position. The purpose of the paper is to inform the colleagues dealing with the same problems in their respective countries with the practice in the Republic of Croatia and to exchange the experience on the subject.
