Antiaggregatory Effect Of Flavonoids
Introduction Leading causes of death in developed countries are cardiovascular diseases. Polyphenols, namely flavonoids and phenolic acids, have many pharmacological properties that can explain their protective role in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases: antioxidant capacity, vasorelaxation, anti-inflammatory and antiaggregatory effects. Beneficial effects of natural sources of polyphenolics on platelet aggregation such as wine (French paradox), green tea (Asian paradox), dark chocolate, gingko, propolis are well documented. [1, 2] Although antiaggregatory activity of flavonoids is well known property of these compounds, the results of a systematic search for highly potent members of this family are still missing. Conclusion Flavonoids can effect platelet aggregation in concentrations that can be achieved in every day diet. As flavonoids are widely distributed in plant kingdom, diet should be taken into account when interpreting platelet aggregation and coagulation results.
