Preliminary results of Scomber japonicus (Houttoyn,1782) population analysis in the Adriatic Sea
Chub mackerel, Scomber japonicus (Houttoyn,1782), is widely distributed in the Adriatic Sea. Although this species is of considerable commercial interest, it biology and ecology has not been sufficiently known till now. This paper represents the results of chub mackerel length and sex distribution in the Midlle Adriatic commercial catches during 1998. The length - weight relationship is studied as well. Total of 419 specimens was analysed, of which 41.03% were males and 58.97% were females. Their fork lengths ranged between 24.6 and 37.8 cm (mean = 28.86 ą 2.758 cm), while weights ranged between 104.96 and 702.49 g (mean = 276.177 ą 123.184 g). The length weight relationship was studied for each sex separatly and for specimens alltogether. It was found that length - weight relationship slightly changes with sex. The length - weight relationship for all fish was described by following parameters: a=0.0005 , b=3.9004 (r2=0.7389). Positive allometry was established.
