THE INTEGRAL TRAFFIC PLANNING AIMING AT SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY IN THE CITY OF ZAGREB

Economic growth and expansion of cities lead to the increasing mobility of citizens. Simultaneously with mobility appears a need for accessibility to all destinations, which is in contrast to undisturbed movement. Parallely, a requirement for sustainable development is imposed as an imperative. Society is becoming less willing to tolerate low quality of the environment, poor air, water and soil quality, as well as low level of transport services. Since these requirements are in conflict, and they represent a barrier to development of each other, it is difficult to find a simple solution. Simplified but unrealistic solution is building new transport infrastructure. Solving traffic problems by building only, especially in contemporary urban areas, is impossible. Alternative solutions are being sought in better regulation of traffic, mobility management, encouraging use of clean vehicles, and development of better public transport. In the last decade, the use of bicycles in the city of Zagreb is experiencing a huge expansion. Bicycle is a flexible mode of transport and the best "compromise" solution for a variety of travel purposes, which successfully combines the demands for mobility, accessibility and environmental protection. The advantages of bicycling are becoming prominent in the cities, especially at shorter distances in the peak period. By proper design of cities and coherent planning of the network of bicycle routes, the use of bicycles can be stimulated and encouraged, which will be shown in this paper.
