Observed Climate Change in Croatia and its impact on hydrology of lowlands
The lowland forests of south-eastern Europe present the reminiscence of large forest areas, strongly influenced by periodic flooding and shallow groundwater tables. Their natural hydrologic regime was through history continuously exposed to various negative influences as intensive forest exploitation and hydro-meliorations. Nowadays there are more indices of regional runaway development of climate change which cause lowering trend of groundwater tables and more intensive droughts. To attenuate past, present and future negative impacts on hydrology of lowlands the possibilities of water table management were discussed in this study. The procedure of estimating the historic state of waterloging based on comparison of relict morphological indicators of hydromorphic soils and present state of groundwater tables from piezometric network was developed according to which major influences as hydro-technical works and disturbances of stand structure were assessed. The possibilities of water table management in the lowland forests i.e. manipulations of soil water status through forest canopy treatment, runoff retention in the landscape, forest defoliators and drought indices were discussed.
