Trust in an Asynchronous World: Can We Build More Secure Infrastructure?

When collaborating on matters that include risk of information abuse, traditional approach calls for a synchronous procedure. Synchronicity of the procedure is a prerequisite for establishing the trust relationship between participants of information exchange. Procedures to transfer and store information in a secure manner are deployed in computing and communication networks in various forms and technologies, but they are basically all drawing on the same principle of synchronicity. With the development of Internet technologies and spreading of Web 2.0 movement, including Rich Internet Application (RIA), Service-oriented Architecture (SOA), and Social Web, as well as cloud computing proliferation, transfer and storage procedures are becoming more asynchronous. In this work we summarize information abuse risks involved with asynchronicity of information exchange and then explore some ideas and concepts on how to evolve existing Internet infrastructure in such a way that those identified risks could be satisfactorily mitigated.
