Development of a new chewing function questionnaire (CFQ):factor analysis

Objectives: To develop a new unidimensional questionnaire for patients’ self assessment of their chewing function (chewing function questionnaire: CFQ. Methods: A focus group of 7 dentists and 15 patients with prosthodontic needs generated a pool of 30 relevant items to describe chewing function. A scale format (Likert 5-point scale) was also decided. A focus group reduced some redundant items and twenty one items remained for pilot testing after which additional 4 items were eliminated. Then the 17 item questionnaire (CFQ) was tested on a larger sample (200 participants). Factor analysis was obtained to investigate the dimensionality of the questionnaire. Results: A total of 200 participants were included (100 in the natural teeth group and 100 in the removable dentures group) to analyze a dimensionality of the 17- items questionnaire and to perform further item reduction if necessary. The initial statistical analysis revealed that the items had been grouped in 3 different dimensions. By eliminating items with complexities greater than one or those items with much larger correlations in the second or the third component, additional 6 questions were eliminated. One more item with the lowest correlation was further eliminated. The final questionnaire included ten items. Conclusions: The newly developed chewing function questionnaire (CFQ) provides a standardized assessment instrument of this construct with minimal time consumption to the patients and the professionals.
